Pacifica Wild Card

On Saturday, February 12, cadets gathered early in the morning for another competition. The bus rides were filled with high spirit and morale which shined through to the competition. We placed 5th overall for Physical training (bringing back another nice shiny trophy) and two more trophies, one of them for Personnel Inspection for the first time ever! Two of our cadets dominated in the field of sit-ups and placed 3rd, for the males, it was Kevin Barber, and for the females, Elisabeth Bell. Hopefully these points will add up and earn us the honor of Distinguished Unit for the first time.

Job well done cadets! Keep up the good work!

Marksmanship Nationals!!!

For the first time in San Ysidro NJROTC history, the Marksmanship Team made it all the way to Nationals, which took place in Birmingham, Alabama. We missed three days of school and spent most of the day either shooting for the competition or practicing for the competition. The team consisted of four talented and hard working individuals: Aaron Thrasher, Tyler Moore, Jeff-Avery Joaquin, and Team Captain Brenna Bronder. We also took an alternative, Enrique Varela, along with Team Coach Chief Campos and chaperon Francis Joaquin.

Out of a total of 26 schools, we placed 17th for our first time. Compared to West View High School, the first time they went to Nationals they placed 19th, so we definitely have a better start with no where to go but up. Greenway High School, also from Area 11, made it up to 5th place and will represent California in the final stage of Nationals. Next year, it'll be San Ysidro High School representing California, only we'll be getting first place instead. During the banquet where they presented all the awards and revealed who won first place, they took the time to recognize the honesty and integrity of three individuals who dry fired and told the range officer instead of hiding it. One of those individuals was our very own, Jeff-Avery Joaquin, who received a large medal that they placed around his neck. Congratulations!

I wouldn't call Alabama a tourist spot during the winter, with its dead trees, dead grass, and plentiful cemeteries. But the people really lived up to Southern hospitality and the food was surprisingly delicious. We ate at places such as the Golden Rule, Red Lobster, and even a Japanese Restaurant called Fuji's, which was amazing. The Chef cooked the food right in front of the guests, twirling the spatula and knife in such a flashy, showy manner and cooking the food to absolute perfection! He even tossed food into our mouths, though only one person managed to catch it! The first day of our arrival, snow started falling in graceful patterns, illuminated by the glow of the hotel lights, and beautifying the barren land of Alabama.

Congratulations and great job!

2011 Area Manager Inspection

Early morning on Friday, January 28, all of the NJROTC unit cadets were required to report for the yearly A.M.I or Area Manager Inspection. We had been practicing this for weeks and time came for us to finally present ourselves. Officers and staff had their own Personnel Inspection before their platoons were inspected as a whole. Being asked questions such as "what do you plan to do once you graduate from High School?," the inspection went rather well; most cadets received scores such as "Excellent" or "Outstanding."

The Award portion of the Inspection proved to drag on way too long. After a while, simply standing there at perfect attention in the blistering heat with the blinding sun was only painful. For the Officers who carried sabres and absolutely had to keep them drawn, it was pure hell. A little while longer, and it soon became unbearable. Unfortunately, we had one cadet collapsing after standing at attention for too long. He was immediately attended to and sent to our Medical Center. Several others followed in pursuit, not fainting, but dehydrated from the sun.

In order to prevent anyone else from fainting, we skipped right into the Pass and Review portion of the inspection, where each of the platoons would salute Commander Spence and stop where they previously were. The Staff Presentation went on without anyone finding out who won the prestigious honor platoon. Commander Spence had multiple useful tips to improve our unit and hopefully we carry them out. Afterwards, we asked about honor platoon, and whichever platoon with the most cadets earning "Outstanding" won.  The winner  was Bravo Platoon!

For this AMI, we had the privledge of having Miss North California sing the National Anthem as she stood alongside Chief Campos, Chief Rayson, and Commander Spence, as well as Mr. Neria and Mr. Espinosa. Mr. Neria and Mr. Espinosa have been supporting our unit and our Area Management Inspection every year. :) We also had a guest visitor who had previously graduated from San Ysidro High School to pursue a career in the Marines, Lance Corporal Alvarez. :)

Congratulations to Bravo Platoon and great job cadets!
